It was a thrill to be back at the annual meeting of the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine (CSHM) which met 31 May – 2 June 2025 at George Brown College, Toronto, in association with the Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities. I enjoyed seeing long-time friends and meeting new colleagues.
With my colleagues Peter Kopplin and Christopher Rutty, I led a “Medical History Discovery Walk” through some of the sites important to the history of medicine in Toronto’s downtown.
Charles Hayter, Christopher Rutty, John Dirks and I participated in a round table titled “Bridging the Gap: Making Medical History Accessible to a General Audience.” It was a good opportunity to reflect on the challenges of writing and publishing a book of medical history for a general audience. I drew from my experience writing Wondrous Transformations to discuss the responsibilities of historians to communicate our work to a wider audience.
CSHM celebrates its 75th anniversary this year and it was a joy to participate in this milestone celebration.
